Overview of Vanguard League

The Vanguard League is a singles league. In other words, its you versus the other players in your division. There are from 6 to 8 players in each division. There are also three levels of play, roughly corresponding to the current B, A2, and A1/Classic levels in the Regular league. These levels are "Basic", "Intermediate", and "Premier". The differences at each level are in the number of games played per match. The actual games played are the same; 301 Double-In/Double-Out, 501 Straight-Start/Double Out, and Cricket. Matches are either 9, 11, or 15 games in length (corresponding to Basic, Intermediate, and Premier levels). Current B players and Rookies may sign up for Basic, Intermediate, or Premier. A2 players may sign up for Intermediate or Premier only. A1 and Classic players may sign up for Premier only. We recommend that Rookie and B players do not sign up for Premier! Please sign up at the Basic or Intermediate levels.

One major difference between the Vanguard singles league, and the other leagues, is that Vanguard does not run on any specific night, nor are you required to play on any specific night. You simply contact your opponent for the match at some point before the week begins. You both agree to meet at a specific time and place, and play your match. You will both have "home" pubs, but you are NOT required to play at these pubs (we recommend that you do play your home matches at your home pub, but you and your opponent may agree to play in any pub). Each player keeps his own score during the games played. Also, each player keeps a record of the match (by filling out the supplied score cards). At the end of the match, each player signs both scorecards. Winning player MUST call in the results to the DDA phone number, as well as faxing or mailing in a copy, of their score card, with both signatures. Copies of the cards without signatures may not be accepted, at the League Administrator's discretion.

Player standings will be will be posted on the DDA website (here).

Format of Matches

The format of a Vanguard match is simple and is listed here. The number of games played depends on the level of play involved.

Basic League: 3 games of 301 DI/DO, 3 games of 501 SS/DO, and 3 games of Cricket.
Intermediate League: 5 games of 301 DI/DO, 3 games of 501 SS/DO, and 3 games of Cricket.
Premier League: 5 games each of 301 DI/DO, 501 SS/DO, and Cricket.

Matches are played in order, 301 games first, then 501 games, then Cricket. There is one point awarded per game won. There is no MATCH point. The match winner is the person who wins the simple majority of match games. At the end of the season, the Division winner is the player with the best won/loss record, in percentages. Games may, at the players' discretion and agreement, be played in any order; either the order listed above, or 1 of each type of game, alternating until all games are played that are to be played (depending upon the level of play).

Playoffs

There will be playoffs in Vanguard after the season has ended. The number of players in the playoffs depends upon the number of divisions at each level. Each level will have separate playoffs; in other words, Basic players won't have to meet Premier players in the playoffs. More information on playoffs is discussed in the Vanguard Rules.

Dues

Dues for Vanguard are $15 per player. There are NO team dues. Also, since play in Vanguard is in a singles format, Vanguard players do NOT count as captains in terms of voting at CPB meetings. If you have an issue with the format of Vanguard play, or any problems, please contact your Vanguard Director, or the League Administrator.

You may also attend the monthly Board Of Directors meeting (these meetings are OPEN to the DDA membership, please come and let us hear what you have to say!!! This league and association are YOURS!)

General Rules

The Official rules for Vanguard League were initially passed at the CPB Meeting, preceding the Fall 2001 Season. Vanguard Rules are posted on the DDA website (HERE).
